The Floating House offers a unique living experience floating above the canopy of the Costa Rica jungle, totally surrounded by nature. It combines expansive jungle views towards the Playa Hermosa surf break, tropical luxury interiors, and an infinity swimming pool - all within walking distance to the beach. The 1.5 acre property is located in Playa Hermosa at Santa Teresa, a hidden gem in Costa Rica’s northern Pacific Coast.

A passion for design & sustainability. Designed by award-winning Costa Rican architect Benjamín García-Saxe, Casa Flotanta (as he calls it) is a master blend of tropical design and sustainability. This is the first time a García-Saxe home is available for purchase on the market.

The actual design of the house is completely unique for this area. All the living areas are lifted off the ground, which creates a perfect setting for panoramic views among the treetops and helps to naturally cool the house — helping it to catch cooling coastal breezes. The home is in a beautiful tropical climate where cool breezes can keep occupants comfortable year-round without the need for air conditioning.

The lungs of The Floating House is an impressive 24m floating bamboo corridor that creates patterns of light and shadow and connect the main living space to the two upstairs bedrooms and the huge open-air, bamboo-lined, spa bathroom. The master and second bedroom make up two of the three pods on the top level in a staggered formation that maximizes sight lines towards the ocean. The third bedroom, downstairs, is more compact with a double bed, en-suite toilet and shower.

Natural teak wood flooring, integrated social areas and the bamboo shafts along the main corridor combine to create fresh and inviting spaces that are both sustainable and beautiful with an unexpected feeling of scale.

Benjamín García Saxe:
"Originally, we explored possibilities of creating large retaining walls and cutting back the soil in order to place the house, a technique typically employed for nearby buildings. Ultimately, we decided to do the exact opposite and therefore allow the slope, the earth, the vegetation, water, and animals to flow underneath the house. We essentially lifted the house up into the air on a series of piloti which gives the impression that it is floating above the hillside…. This common sense solution allowed us to create a very delicate intervention, one that allows the terrain to breathe whilst providing spectacular views out towards the ocean from the key location on the site.”

The Floating House incorporates sustainable features that reduce headaches and allow for a more natural feel, including raised construction to reduce impact on forest undergrowth, passive solar design, UV water filtration systems, and natural ventilation for efficient heating and cooling without depending on mechanical fixes, though all the bedrooms offer A/C and ceiling fans.

The Ultimate Surf Home. The Floating House has also been called the Ultimate Surf Home for it’s laid back feel among the treetops and direct views to the renowned Santa Teresa beaches. With a short 5-minute walk to the beach and quick access to the break, The Floating House offers two good surfing spots right on Playa Hermosa: one is a wide beach break on a flat beach and the other a point break to the north. No need to go far, the exclusive location means it’s all part of the same experience.

At The Floating House, the jungle backdrop eases into rhythm with the waves. Your soul is enriched in and out of the water. The infinity swimming pool, which sits below house, allows you to enjoy the sunset, watch the waves and listen to the chorus of parrots and monkeys which live alongside in the tree canopy.

A Tropical Family Treehouse. The Floating House floats above the canopy of the jungle and feels nestled among the treetops, a privileged spot for the family. Though technically not a treehouse, the combination of bamboo shafts, open design and the use of wood throughout the home help blur the line between inside and out. The natural material elements throughout the home help to tie it in with its surroundings, including a the hillside-facing bathroom and an outdoor bamboo shower. The natural flow and distribution with an integrated social area bring the family closer to nature without leaving home.

It’s a slice of paradise when you get to wake up in the trees and feel inspired by your home.
